Corporate Pollinator Monitoring at St Paul’s Festival Gardens

Engaging Businesses in Urban Biodiversity Action

Pollinating London Together partnered with CMS to deliver a hands-on pollinator monitoring session at St Paul’s Festival Gardens in the City of London.

The event combined ecological fieldwork, species identification and corporate engagement to demonstrate how businesses can actively contribute to urban biodiversity.

Why Festival Gardens Matters

St Paul’s Festival Gardens is an important green space within the Square Mile. Designed with pollinator-friendly planting, the site supports:

  • native wildflowers
  • flowering shrubs
  • grassland areas
  • diverse insect populations

 

Urban green spaces like this play a vital role in sustaining pollinators within densely built environments.

What We Did

Under the guidance of pollinator specialists Dr Heather Barrett-Mold and Dr Konstantinos Tsiolis, participants conducted structured pollinator netting and identification.

Activities included:

  • targeted sweep netting
  • species identification
  • discussion of monitoring methodology
  • education on pollinator diversity

 

Over 250 bee species exist in the UK, and participants learned to distinguish between:

  • bumblebees
  • solitary bees
  • hoverflies
  • other pollinating insects

 

All captured insects were carefully released after identification.
