PLT was overjoyed to host its first art exhibition at St Vedast-alias-Foster in March 2022.
The exhibition featured the unique multimedia art of Alex Hirtzel – an international artist who has dedicated her work to the world of pollinators. Her work fuses classical painting methods with augmented reality and combines references from scientific research, historical artworks, and her unique paintings.
Alex’s recent work, first shown last summer at the University of Bristol Botanic Gardens, uses novel techniques to create a narrative of pollinators today. It was a unique opportunity to celebrate the joy and complexity of pollinators in artistic form, learn about recent research into the different sensory modalities that are used by pollinators to interact with flowering plants, and to join the conversation about how we can improve pollinator habitats and the future of pollinators in the City of London through PLT activities.
PLT was also delighted to include the work of Lily Hunter Green – an installation artist and composer – at the exhibition. Lily creates multi-component immersive works based on pollinators under the banner of BEE COMPOSED: an interdisciplinary more-than-human ‘hive’ project that uses digital media, music and performance to communicate rapidly changing ecologies, and humans’ role in that process. An Associate Research Fellow at Birkbeck College (London) and Artist-in-Residence at the University of Cambridge, Lily’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
This exhibit is a good example of the power of art and science collaborations.
